‘Many states have doubled down on forcing insurers and insured people to subsidize abortions. That often leaves Health Care Sharing Ministries as the only pro-life option.’
WASHINGTON — June 24 marks the second anniversary of the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court that overturned Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision that nationally legalized abortion.
“Now that the issue is back with the states, we’re reminded of how important it is to secure real health care freedom, which means, among other things, not having to subsidize practices and procedures that violate Christian conscience,” says Katy Talento, executive director of the Alliance of Health Care Sharing Ministries.
“Many states have doubled down on forcing insurers and insured people to subsidize abortions. That often leaves Health Care Sharing Ministries as the only pro-life option.
Despite marking two years after the decision, many Americans’ views on abortion have not changed. According to a survey from Marist College, “nearly six in ten Americans (59%) oppose the 2022 U.S. Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.” In addition, two in three Americans want to see at least some restrictions on abortion, with almost 60 percent of Americans saying abortion should be restricted after the first trimester, permitted only in certain exceptional cases, or not permitted at all.
“As the Marist survey reports, despite all the media gaslighting, it is still mainstream to be pro-life! These states that have abortion mandates are out of touch and Health Care Sharing Ministries are needed now more than ever to protect the conscience rights of pro-life Christians,” Talento says.
The Marist poll reports that more than half of all Americans have always and still do oppose being forced to subsidize abortions through their tax dollars. But insurance mandates for abortion coverage are a backdoor forced subsidy as well — when people pay their premiums, those dollars go into a pool that insurance companies are now required to use to pay for the abortions of all enrollees. The increased trend by the federal and state governments to require all insurance plans to cover chemical and surgical abortion means that anyone who is insured may be paying for the abortions of other people just by paying their premiums each month.
“Meanwhile, Health Care Sharing Ministries give Christians the option of protecting their families with affordable, shared medical needs while not being compelled to facilitate abortions or any other immoral procedures, such as gender-bending surgeries and drug regimens,” says Talento.
