‘Vaccine mandates, miseducation, special needs and other factors have swelled the ranks of families that want more choices,’ says Alliance of Health Care Sharing Ministries’ Katy Talento

WASHINGTON D.C. — More and more parents are seeing a need to make their own choices when it comes to crucial services for their children.

Homeschooling has doubled over the last two years as many parents got an online look at what many schools were serving up and did not like what they saw. Other parents have turned to homeschooling to better meet their children’s special needs.

“The proportion of American families homeschooling at least one child grew from 5.4% in spring 2020 to 11.1% in fall 2021, according to a U.S. Census Bureau analysis,” the Los Angeles Times reported. “The number of Black families choosing to home-school increased five-fold during that time, from 3.3% to 16.1%.”

“Just as parents are rethinking their children’s schooling, they can also be rethinking their approach to health care,” says Katy Talento, executive director of the Alliance of Health Care Sharing Ministries (The Alliance, ahcsm.org). “Health Care Sharing is a really tangible method for homeschool families to save money and provide a health care solution for their children that is consistent with their faith and honors parental choice.”

As pandemic-related mandates continue to disrupt normal school-year rhythms, many Christian parents are rethinking their approach.

“Vaccine mandates, miseducation, special needs and other factors have swelled the ranks of families that want more choices,” Talento says. “It’s only natural that thinking outside the box in schooling can lead to out-of-the-box innovation in other areas.”

Parents who recognize their God-given responsibility to educate their children—whether by homeschooling or by taking great care in choosing a school and curriculum—are naturally inclined to embrace Scripture’s call to stewardship and to sharing each other’s financial burdens, as Health Care Sharing Ministry members do with health care needs.

Homeschoolers represent tens of thousands of Health Care Sharing Ministries member households who pray and send monthly financial shares directly to other members, along with notes and cards of encouragement,” Talento says.

Founded in 2007 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., the Alliance of Health Care Sharing Ministries is a 501(c)(6) trade organization representing the common interests of Health Care Sharing Ministry organizations which are facilitating the sharing of health care needs (financial, emotional, and spiritual) by individuals and families, and their participants. The Alliance engages with federal and state regulators, members of the media, and the Christian community to provide accurate and timely information on medical cost sharing.
